Dr. B.G. Swapna Lekha is a first-year postgraduate student at Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences. She completed her MBBS from Shri Sathya Sai Medical College and Research Institute under Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth University. She has a keen interest in clinical dermatology, dermatopathology, and emerging technologies in medicine, particularly the application of Artificial Intelligence in dermatological practice and research. Research Interests:
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming dermatology clinical practices by improving diagnostic accuracy, patient care, and healthcare accessibility. Dermatology is a visually oriented specialty, making it highly suitable for AI-based technologies such as machine learning, deep learning, and convolutional neural networks (CNNs). AI systems can analyze clinical and dermoscopic images to identify various skin diseases including melanoma, psoriasis, eczema, acne, fungal infections, and pigmentary disorders with high precision. These technologies assist dermatologists in early detection, differential diagnosis, disease monitoring, and treatment planning. Teledermatology integrated with AI has enhanced access to dermatological care in remote and underserved areas. AI also supports electronic health records, predictive analytics, and personalized medicine by analyzing large datasets and identifying treatment outcomes. In cosmetic dermatology, AI applications help in skin analysis, aging assessment, and procedural planning. Despite its advantages, challenges such as data privacy, ethical concerns, algorithm bias, limited clinical validation, and dependence on high-quality datasets remain significant. Proper integration of AI with clinical expertise is essential to ensure safe and effective patient management. AI is not intended to replace dermatologists but to augment clinical decision-making and improve efficiency in dermatology practice. Continuous advancements in AI are expected to revolutionize dermatological diagnostics, research, and patient-centered healthcare in the future.
