Research Interests:
The skin is increasingly recognized as a biologically active organ that interacts closely with the immune, neurological, and endocrine systems. The epidermis actively secretes a wide range of biomolecules, including mediators influenced by the skin microbiome. Many disease-associated mediators, such as cytokines, are shared across cutaneous and systemic physiological processes. Monitoring these biomarkers has the potential to provide clinically actionable information for diagnosis and disease management. Non-invasive skin sampling technologies offer a rapid, painless, and cost-effective approach for detecting these biomarkers. Over the years, we have identified distinct skin-surface cytokine signatures associated with multiple pathological conditions, as well as differences between healthy controls, lesional, and non-lesional skin. These studies have included psoriasis, type 2 diabetes, rosacea, atopic dermatitis, and chronic kidney disease (Experimental Dermatology, 2023; DOI: 10.1111/exd.15037). Our latest findings demonstrate, for the first time, the potential of skin-surface biomarkers to classify disease subpopulations within the paediatric atopic dermatitis population. In addition, we report novel correlations between skin-surface biomarker levels and clinical response to biologic therapy in patients with psoriasis. Collectively, these findings further support the utility of skin-surface biomarkers as clinically relevant indicators for disease diagnosis, patient stratification, and therapeutic monitoring, bringing this technology closer to routine clinical implementation.
