Dr Nalini Kaul completed her Master of Science in Biochemistry from Kashmir University in India and her PhD. from the reputed PGIME&R Chandigarh, India. She got her post-doctoral training at St Boniface General Hospital Winnipeg Canada and at the University of Southern California, USA. Thereafter she took a Senior Scientist position at the University of Dallas, Texas. Following her return to Canada in 2000 she worked as Technical Director on Clinical trials with Hill Top Research and then, moved on to hold a joint appointment as Sr. Director of Regulatory Affairs and Director of Clinical Trials with a local company. At present she is Vice President of Technical Services at Princeton Consumer Research, a CRO conducting clinical trials serving North American and the UK. She serves as technical expert, advising and consulting with clients. She serves as Investigator on many trials related to skin, antiaging, hair care, dandruff, photobiology, dietary supplements, probiotics, the microbiome and more. She has published 45 papers in national and international journals, has several book chapters, magazine articles, other writeups to her credit and has presented widely at conferences, both nationally and internationally. Research experience involves: Cosmetics, Natural Health Products/ dietary supplements, Veterinary products, and OTC drugs. She regularly consults on efficacy and safety studies involving Antiaging; hydration, barrier disruption, antidandruff, patch testing, sunscreen use antiperspirants/deodorants, supplements, devices and use tests.
Research Interests:
Facial skin reflects individual’s physical appearance and care is needed to protect it from various insults which produce reactive oxygen species and free radicals. These oxidative agents induce skin disorders like rough texture, fine lines, wrinkling, loss in elasticity/firmness, hyperpigmentation, earlier aging. Skin is protected from exogenous & endogenous harmful agents by cosmetics reinforcing beauty/ attractiveness by not only improving external appearance but also promoting & maintaining longevity. Skin care formulations nourish, improve texture, integrity, moisturize, barrier, promote elasticity & firmness and photo protect. Evaluating their safety & effectiveness assumes prime importance for evidence-based products. Our objective using scientific strategies, was to assess the effects of a multifunctional cosmetic with moisturizing, barrier, cosmetic and pigment correction with UV protection in 35 healthy F (35-60y). Participants meeting study criteria were enrolled. 12 week Test article usage (AM & PM) on clean skin. Efficacy included expert grading -fine lines & wrinkles, skin tone, pores, skin texture, and overall appearance: bioinstrumentation -Corneometer ®, Tewameter ®, Colorimeter®, Visia CR® Imaging and self-assessment questionnaires. Safety included tolerability and AE collection. Results showed statistically significant improvement in clinical grading parameters; bioinstrumentation; digital photos & overall appearance. Product preference seen from self-perception questionnaires. In conclusion facial skin is a concern and products are in high demand that can prevent it from various onslaughts, keeping it disease free and promote its longevity. Using knowledge, sound proven strategies in a well thought out clinical design help distinguish evidence-based products. Our clinical knowledge and study design utilizing latest scientific techniques showed efficacy, safety and subject satisfaction for the multifunctional cosmetic product tested.
